I haven't done a master for several years, but when I did, I took a cheap pair
of needle nose pliers and ground them down on my grinder to extra slim, with a
little groove in the end so they would fit inside the cylinder and squeeze
that deep snap ring.B B  Now I have a dedicated tool for that job, should it
ever arise again.

Cool. I put a sheet metal screw in it and levered it out.

Snap ring pliers did that trick in a couple of minutes.
