Not only were they the colour for an indicator lamp, that type of lamp was 
fitted to other vehicles in the UK.  IMHO Land Rover Ltd was the last major 
manufacturer to use them in the UK and at least one of the prototype Range 
Rovers had them to the front.  They seemed to be a favourite with car sized 
trailer builders as well.
Lights were not different colours from side to side as Hal suggests, they 
were (and still are) red facing rear and white facing front.  Indicator 
lights can be either amber or white to the front and amber or red to the 
rear.
