It is broken in the other direction too. My daughter runs the OB-GYN of a
large hospital outside of Atlanta. Her annual premium for malpractice is
over $80K. She takes home about $25K after the malpractice premium. She
says it is a racket but after 2 lawsuits she doesn't dare *not* carry the
insurance. A lot of people think the doctors and nurses are getting all
that money. They aren't. It's the insurance companies and most especially
the lawyers.
Also, if you need emergency (immediate) care, remember that you are paying
for not only your treatment but the treatment of several other people as
well. They are the people who don't use a primary care physician. When they
need treatment for whatever they go straight to the immediate care facility
(ER or whatever). They have no insurance even if they could afford it and no
savings. They know that the law says the facility cannot turn them away and
that YOU will pay for them.
That's how the politicians (mostly lawyers) solved the healthcare problem
the last time they touched it. IE they take the money out of your pocket if
you are a hard working responsible citizen. That's also why a lot of us are
scared as we wait to see what they've done to us this time!
I saw a great bumper sticker the other day. "Please don't tell my family I'm
a lawyer. They think I'm a piano player in a whore house."
