No, I used a two part ferrite core, about 1.75 inches in diameter.
It had a plastic spool that fit into the core halves.

I had this laying around.  I can't remember where I got it.
It seemed about the right size.

A torrid would probably work. Just a pain to wind.

My brother knows the exact core to use.  I think he is going to 
build one for his Midget.  He works for a place that makes 
transformers.  I'll email the specifics.
