My fathers bike is a blast to drive. He drove it down to my house late
Sunday night that he got it running. A friend with a speedometer on his bike
confirmed that it does a steady 15mph.

I was reading the latest issue of Make Magazine and they had a little tidbit
on
putting a small 50cc motor on a bicycle. There's a bunch online store
selling these kits for about $140.
This is sort of the like the motor Frank had discussed in his last post.

Here is a nice conversion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2vUzqlexgQ

I thought it would be neat to throw one of these on a track bike I have.
Heck,
I could even commute to work on the nice days and save some serious gas
money.

That is, until I found out that, in most states, these are not road legal.
In
Pennsylvania, you will get pulled over an slapped with $160 fine. The issue
is
you need to register and be insured and you can't register it because
you have no title or VIN.

The only way I think I can get around this is to do what the cobra kit car
folks do. Just take a look at the back of Hemmings to see what they are
selling old Ford roadster titles for.

Anybody got a junk moped with a decent title they want to sell cheap?

Oh yea there is the other fantasy method.. "Application for Specially
constructed Vehicle" That's where I take my motor converted bike to the
local
motorcycle shop/inspection station and somehow convince them to perform a
safety
evaluation and help me get a new title.
The problem here is that it's not in their interest to do this
because they would rather sell me a new moped!

The rub for me is this:
http://www.ezscooternv.com/currie/bicycle_law.htm

Basically if I want to put a 1hp electric motor on my bike it's fine
I don't even need to register it! Federally mandated!

But I'm not allowed to put a little 1hp gas motor on my bike!
