They have always been MX-5's.  For the first 20 years Mazda had license for the 
use of the Miata name.  When the license came up for renewal the owner of the 
name wanted to much money so Mazda stopped using the name.  But in North 
America, at least,  it is still called a Miata by the enthusiastic and probably 
the general public.

It is a great car and with the retractable hard top it gives you the benefit of 
a convertible with the security of a fixed top car.  It has been my feeling 
since getting one in 2000 that if Donald was still with us this is where he 
would have taken the Sprite.
