This is almost certainly the Crank Position Sensor, CPS.
It is located on the bellhousing at about 1:30 when looking toward the 
firewall. About $60.00.

I had this exact problem last year in my Cherokee of the same vintage. I 
tried all the usual suspects and then read that this is a common 
problem. Google CPS and Jeep.
