Check the real ground cable, the real heavy one from the block to the
body. You may have some corrosion on one end, forcing all those
electrons to find another path.

Dearly Beloved,
While trying to resurrect my dormant Tiger, laboring on Labor Day, I got

smoke rising out of the engine. I stopped cranking and turned everything
off. Closer inspection revealed the ground wire from the back of the
generator to the frame was toast, well kind of a gooey mess really, obviously
it got real hot!
