I thought about you and Lake Marrone when I saw the rising waters about
a foot away from our front door early Saturday morning. The three
Alpines in the driveway and the two Tigers in the garage were ok. Not
so for the cars in the street. Here's a clip of my earlier reply to Ole:
I'm dried out, but the poor Capri is still a tad bit on the damp
side.
The Saturday before-dawn downpour washed everyone's newspapers
down their driveways, into the gutters and down the streets. They
collected at the storm drain in front of our house, blocking same, and
creating a quite substantial Lake Republic.
It was completely up to the doors on the Cherokee and our son's
pick-em-up, both of which took a bit of water on the passenger side.
That equated to about half-way up the doors on the Capri.
We got water in the crankcase and the transmission. The rear
axle was ok, and the month-old seals on the front spindles kept the new
bearings dry there. I spent the whole weekend getting it as dry as I
could, and drove it to work Monday and Tuesday with the windows down and
the sunroof open <YES IT WAS COLD>. I can drive it with the windows up
now, but still have to sit on a plastic trash bag to keep my buns dry.
So, after five days it looks like the Capri will survive, though I don't
understand why the radio speakers are still working--they were
underwater for a couple of hours.
I haven't checked it yet, but I think the Cherokee should be ok. Both
axles have snorkel tubes on the housing vents, and the tranny and
transfer case are mostly above the door-line. I still have to check the
brakes and wheel bearings on the car trailer though--it was completely
submerged.
So, early in the first period, the score is El Nino 1, Ramon 0.

P.S. Just a few weeks ago the Los Angeles Times did a little feature on
past storms, and they printed a 1984 or '85 picture of a flooded street
with several submerged cars. In the foreground was a rear-quarter view
of an Alpine or Tiger submerged up to the gas cap. Very sad.
