I've seen some pretty serious rust buckets that were and have been salvaged.
I would reconsider chucking the 260.

Subject: 260 ??

I pulled the stock 260 from my Tiger several years ago. I was told that a
late
model 302 would make the car a "dream machine" and to save the 260 for the
next guy that might want my car to be an original. I didn't protect the
engine
from moisture (it was stored indoors) and upon last examination it looks
like
the Titanic (but without the vegetation) Should I pitch out these rusty
remains? Should I save some bits for use with the 302 installation? Should I
save it all ? Are 260s rare? It's really rusty, I doubt the crank could ever
be cleaned up again. Please help !
Tom p.s. I know I screwed up by letting it rust
