I have just completed welding in new steel sections around the spring shackles
as well as the part of the cross member the the exhaust pipes pass through.
I'd say each section replaced may have been about 10 inches long.

A good frame shop can do this for you fairly easily too but it did of course
require dropping the rear suspension to get at the spring shackles.

While you've got the frame opened, coat as much of the remaining frame's
insides with a rust inhibitor like POR-15. A sophisticated tool made from a
rag and a coat hanger works fine for this!
