Jim,
There is a series of black wires , with ring ends, floating
around the back of your dash. While your speedo doesn't
need them to work, your light does. This this is the ground
wire for the electrical circuit, and mounts under the clamp
nuts holding the instrument in. Every instrument has one,
and some are strung out in a daisy chain from gauge to
gauge.
