Larry,
     Great idea but your cost estimate is low.  Moving a car in a 
covered trailer would cost in the neighborhood of $1,100 each way.  I 
had a car shipped from Denver to the east coast and it cost me $1,140.
  Maybe if there was a central location for pickup it would be less 
expensive.  By the way, a covered trailer is the only way to go.
