Jim,

Assuming you already have a close-ratio toploader, you might consider
having it gone through (rebuilt) with wide ratio gears. There have been
postings of recommended places to have this work done if you don't want to
do it yourself. It might seem an intimidating job, but I did mine, so how
hard can it be? With new synchros, detents, seals, bearings, etc., you'll
have yourself a sweet shifting unit and no external changes.
