Theo,

I detect a bit of confusion on the Tach question. There are really two
issues: 1) How does the distributor send it's signal, and is it wired to
the tach. 2) How does an additional unit (high energy spark producer)
effect this situation.

Most using the Unilite, or Pertronix electronic points substitution only
are not having problems. These units handle the same, or higher
current, as points. Thus they work well with the stock tach if wired
properly.

When a High Energy unit is added, the electronic points no longer have
to handle the current required to charge a coil, so just a small amount
is used to trigger the High Energy Module. This can drastically
influence the signal to the tach, and is probably the foremost cause of
problems.

Many High Energy units have auxiliary modules, such as MSD, to put out a
higher current signal for the tach. Sometimes these are built-in,
sometimes they are extra cost. Modern car engines use high energy from
the factory, and the tachs are built for this signal. Adding an extra
circuit that is only needed on older vehicles would raise the price to
those who do not need it.

Solutions exist, depending upon units bought, to adapt stock tachs, you
just have to ask the manufacturer, not the dealer, before you buy. Most
have web sites and can be sent inquiries.
