Steve,

They certainly don't give you very much of that red soy-sauce in those
rebuild kits do they. I thought I was going to have to order take-out
to get another helping. Now that I hear its hydrogenated, I'll
definitely not add it to my diet.

I rebuilt my brake booster a few weeks ago with the help of one of my
experienced local club members. Luckily he had a few extra of those
mini-tubes from other jobs.

By the way, is there a potential market for that crazy looking tool you
have to build to hold everything in place while you're trying not to
score the cylinder wall? We used a welding rod and it had just about
the right tension. If I could do that insertion thing correctly I think
I'd change my occupation to safe-cracking, or bomb defusing. Definitely=

stay away from the coffee for a day prior to doing this.

Sorry, I don't have a source of the jelly for you.

Anyone know if I've done much damage to my engine by driving around with=

that leaky booster? The white smoke finally clued me into where my
brake fluid was disappearing to.

Ciao,

Frank Bonifazi

Subject: Re-built Hydraulics

Tigers,

It has been noted that Tom Hall, frequent technical contributor and
knowledgeable person, has some recommendations about using synthetic
hydraulic fluids.

He believes that the new rubber does not properly fit the bore unless it=

is swelled by immersion in some regular DOT 3/4 fluid first, to obtain
the correct dimensions. He recommends a short soak, before
installation, and a liberal use of the Castrol "Red Grease". He
believes that this grease may be a form of "hydrogenated", or jelled
brake fluid.

I imagine that a completely new Lucas/Girling replacement cylinder
already has the "Red Grease" applied. The correct rebuild kit should
come with a little "soy sauce" package of the Magic Red Grease, which
may be sufficient to swell the seal when used in assembly. If not, then=

the new ones may have to be disassembled for soaking and re-greasing.

I have installed new clutch master cylinder and slave (some tricks about=

the "Universal Replacement Kit" for those who need it are to use your
old push rod, as the Universal Kit threaded unit is way too long. Need
circlip pliers and CAUTION.

Now, the question of the day:

Does anyone know where to get this Red Grease, if you don't have a kit,
or need more. It is also used in servos.

If so, please post to List.

Steve
