Chris,

We've rebuilt Speedo and other instruments for Sunbeam for over 20 years.  
What you describe sounds like a compressed O ring under the glass of the 
unit.  Try taking the bezel and glass off and see if you have the same 
problem.  Many customers send in their units for rebuild and nothing is wrong 
with them except for the compressed or missing rubber O ring under the glass. 
 What happens is that the center of the needle gets hung up on the glass 
surface and thus stops in various positions.

Sold cables for years and early Mustang and Fairlane is correct, the cable 
should work without any modification.  You could also check out the Speedo 
drive gear, the nylon one located on the transmission end.
