Might need new master cylinder

Hi All:

The brake system on my MkIA is pretty stock I think (except stainless
hoses). I have an intermittent problem (the timing appears to be random but
it happens on almost every drive) where the brake pedal goes partly soft.
If I pump it once it is immediately restored to normal (firm). There are no
other symptoms - the car stops straight, no fluid loss, etc. When I say the
pedal goes soft I mean that the pedal travels a couple of inches more than
usual with little or no resistance then I get a firm pedal and the car
still stops fine. It feels like I am losing about half the pedal. Could
this be anything but the master?

If it is the master, what is the best way to go as far as replacement? I
saw the Girling units going for $225 or so. Is there a better but simple
alternative? I looked at the archives and saw a lot of talk about dual
systems and such but I would like to keep this simple and reliable if
possible.

Thanks in advance.
Also thanks to all who responded to my "Curious charging problem" a couple
of weeks ago. It was the regulator.

Greg
