Why replace the alternator? They are good for
at least 60K miles and sometimes 100K.
The only draw back is the inherent no charge
at idle that all generators have.
It sounds like one of the bearings has gone bad.
This may have occurred because you
overtightened the fan belt and put a load on
the bearing. You'll do the same with an
alternator if you overtighten a belt.
You can drive the car until the shriek gets
so load that the neighbors dogs howl when you
drive by. Turning your radio up will also help
to make the noise go away.
