The TREMEC TR-3550, and the newer, stronger unit (can't recall number)
are larger than the T-5 in the shift linkage area. There are three flat
covers that can be removed to locate the shifter, but the rear-most is
most likely the one you would use.

This transmission is a good deal stronger, with 500 lb-ft torque
capability than the T-5 World class of between 350-400 lb-ft, but will
take more transmission tunnel cutting. The first gear is 3.27, compared
to the T-5 3.34, the rest are practically the same, but the fifth is
0.68, and 0.63 for the T-5. This would give you higher cruise rpm, but
more torque for hills and acceleration. These OD ratios were chosen for
C.A.F.E. Federal fleet fuel economy reasons, not performance, which is
usually 0.8.

Both transmissions are currently built by the same company in Mexico
that acquired the T-5 rights, and has been making the Top Loader innards
for years.

I have the dimensions around somewhere, but if you are going to cut, the
TREMEC is the stronger box, and liked well by those who use them. Unless
you are getting a used one, they are both made by the same guys now.
