Hi Larry,
That was my initial reaction, but Dave's mechanic's suggestion is to thread the
die on all the way (not just flush with the end of the axle), do the banging on
the end of the axle as before,  then use the die to restore the threads. Having
a nut flush with the outer end of the threads doesn't necessarily do enough to
protect the threads, since a well-placed blow will just distort both the nut and
the end of the axle, and that will leave you with a nut that you can't get off,
and no way to effectively restore the threads. Having a soft-metal cup placed
over the end of the axle would probably be better, along with the use of a
dead-blow or lead hammer as you suggest.
