Rob,

Both crinkle finish black gloss and hammertone finishes were very
popular in the 50's-60's Amateur Radio gear. When making my own
equipment, I frequently used one, or the other.

The hammertone needed the normal room temperature, clean environment for
application and curing. The wrinkle finish did require heat from heat
lamps or a warm oven. The warmer the surface, the more wrinkled it
became. Try both out on test metal first, to get your timing right.
