I own a car dolly and use it all the time for moving various cars. There
are two types...one where the wheels steer after you remove a pin, and
the other where the platform on which the car rests steers while the
wheels don't. Mine is of the latter type and is very straight forward to
use, but either is quite satisfactory, as long as you ascertain the
idiosynchracies of the type you use. The type where the dolly wheels
steer involves lashing the steering wheel of the car when the pin is
removed. If you decide not to remove the pin, for whatever reason, then
you must leave the steering wheel free. Neither type is back-upable for
more than a few feet when loaded, so plan your route through gas
stations and restaurants.

I towed an Alpine from Southern Missouri to Eastern Ontario on a dolly.
I removed the drive shaft because the trip was quite lengthy, but have
towed shorter distances without worrying about the driveshaft, but
ensuring the gearbox is in neutral. Check that the diff has fluid. Make
sure the rubber on the rear wheels is up to highway speed use, and have
a spare available. The front wheels, lashed to the dolly, simply have to
hold air. If you are towing at night, at least think about the lights on
your rig. If the tow vehicle brake and signal lights can't be seen from
behind the tow, make some arrangement for them on the tow.

Hope this helps.
