Some time back, when I was trying to diagnose my temperature woes,
someone on the list suggested the purchase of an infrared thermometer
to enable one to check on your gauge readings. Radio Shack sells
one, cat. no. 22-325, for $49.99 (I bought mine on sale) and it's very
handy. You just point it at the region where you want a temp. reading
and push the button. I found if you read the temp at the thermostat
housing you can see at what temp it opens and compare to your
gauge reading. If they are not the same, then it could be several
things - the sender, the gauge (in my case) or the voltage regulator for
the gauges. If you put a resistance in series with the gauge, you can
change the readings to make it more accurate.
