I can confirm the "single digit for a year" date code business.  The 
Continentals that came with my Western wheels had a number of incomprehensible 
numbers molded into the sidewall, so I copied them all down and sent them to 
Conti.  They were able to decode that a 9 in one of the digits meant that the 
tires were made in a year that ended in 9, and only the model and a few other 
details allowed them to pin it down to 1989.

It's much easier today.
