In the link Tom Witt gave (in another message) to Norm's websits, there are
some details on Tiger vs. Alpine bodyshell identification. The big problem
with publishing a comprehensive list of these is that it is still possible
for a potential buyer to be misled just because they don't know "the factory
method". If you've never seen how Jensen did the stick welding on the
sheetmetal that was added in, how are you to know what is right or wrong -
assuming you've got the technical wherewithal to tell a stick weld from MIG
or TIG to begin with. What is the right shape of the generator relief in the
right-front fender? I suppose a template could be published... But, as has
been remarked, a complete "what to look for" guide is also a "how to do it"
guide for the unscrupulous. The best answer right now is education... Make
sure that every potential Tiger buyer understands the issue, and that there
are people out there willing to look at their potential purchase to help
them determine its authenticity.
Regarding the particular car on eBay: There are many Tigers out there with
strange modifications that suited the whim of the owner at the time. If the
eBay Tiger is genuine, as claimed by the seller, then it will stand up to
up-close scrutiny, and all is well, so long as the buyer wasn't expecting a
Concours winner in "stock" class. The selling price is just a reflection of
eBay fever. Remember the $1200 "original" LAT hood?
