I was reading the thread on the x-pipe h-pipe controversy. While I
understand the confusion over this I also have a tenuous understanding but
the best explanation I received was that the exhaust pulse as it travels
down the tube needs to heat the pipe all the way down the pipe. This heating
up of the pipe actually slows the gas pulse down the pipe as energy of the
pulse is used to 'heat' the pipe. One of the purposes I understood of using
the cross over pipes is that it permits constant heating of the exhaust on
both sides helping to improve low end torque by improving scavenging by
helping to keep exhaust pulse speed up by keeping the pipes warm.
Of course the x-pipe improves the efficiency of this cross over and uses
less energy to split the gases. 
I have a cross over set up as well but it is an H-pipe arrangement.
