Hi Frank,
The flywheel diameter should be 157 teeth for both, you should keep the 5.0
flywheel with that engine.
You can measure the length of the front dress by seeing how far things stick
out ahead of the front oil pan flange (or for the water pump, how far ahead
of the left OR right head) and then determine if it's close or not even
close. The damper on the 5.0 is pretty long...

For my 5.0 installation, I swapped over the original 260/289 timing cover,
and I used a Professional Products short 50 oz damper
<http://www.professional-products.com/harmonicdampers.htm>. This damper has
engraved timing marks in 3 locations, and it has both 3 and 4 hole mounting
pattern for the pulley, so the Tiger's original pulley bolts right on. The
downside of changing the timing cover is that the 5.0 block has locating
dowel rings on two of the lower mounting bolts, and the original cover
doesn't have enough beef there to drill it to accept the dowel rings.
Therefore, aligning the front cover is tricky - I used the damper to hold
the cover in position while assembling things.

However, the 5.0 has a reverse rotation water pump, and it wasn't clear to
me at the time whether or not the cooling would be affected by putting in a
standard rotation pump, and the overall assembly was longer than the 260/289
assembly anyway. Probably the Explorer setup is short enough, but then you
need to get an Explorer damper and set the whole thing up for a serpentine
belt. Curtis Fisher's article on TU covers that, if I recall correctly
(<http://www.tigersunited.com/techtips/CurtisFisherCrate/pt-CurtisFisherCrat
e1.asp>).

Good luck,
Theo
