Now that, I believe, is the first negative report posted on POR 15.
Alcohol diluted gasoline is a relative newcomer to our gas stations, and
was mandated by states with high pollution. It was, of course, strongly
endorsed by the farmers of alcohol convertible crops - when there is a
perfectly valid market for a much better application.
I don't believe the states make as much in revenue, based on consumable
alcohol products, as they do from Gasohol, which carries the same tax
rate (high) as non alcohol mixed fuels. Would you believe they are
subsidized, as well? Great lobby.
Alcohol provides less heat in the combustion chamber, but less power
too, so it runs cooler, and can take higher compression pressures
without "pinging". Good for racing when you have too much heat from the
AV gas than the cooling system can handle. Some race cars run 100%
alcohol, but all the jets are much larger. The price of the gas goes
up, but the consumption does, as well. Normal consumer use blends are
made within the range of current carburation / injector calibration.
I have read that the New Orleans disaster is delaying the seasonal
formulation change of gasoline, but I do not recall which season
requires it, by law, to reduce pollution.
This fuel change can very well be believed to influence the
compatibility of additives and coatings, rather than past successes.
What ever happened to "hot tin dip" for tanks, or electroplating the inside?
