        Just check National Mustang catalogs and you will find the
transmission drive gear and they are plastic.
Steel driving a plastic gear would wear the plastic gear out very quickly.

The transmission drive gear has range of 6 to 9 teeth, I believe, and all
the gears are color coded for easier identification.   The speedo cable
gears are also color coded.

I think the driving gear insidethe trans is steel.  But I am probably
wrong. The gear innthe end of the cable is plastic. Other listers know for
sure.
