Looking at all of the data, it's apparent that with a K&N filter you
definitely need to (a) oil it prior to use so that it will capture dirt
(that wasn't really stated, but using a K&N filter dry is not a good idea),
and (b) you need to service it. Unless you drive your Tiger in very dusty
conditions and often, that really only amounts to maybe twice a year putting
it in the sink and washing it out... Not really a big deal.

For outright performance, the lack of height of the stock filter (and the
K&N) is the biggest problem. Quite a few people are running taller than
stock air filter elements by just forming  them into an oval shape. I'm sure
someone can give a part number for a taller than stock filter that is the
right circumference... The extra height gives a large increase in the
airflow capability but also a corresponding increase in the amount of time
you can run the filter before it needs to be serviced.
