There is a possibility that your fuel line is getting too hot; you
are definitely running your fuel line where the heat goes the most.

A number of years ago I experience exactly the symptoms you
described; it turned out to be a coating getting on the points and the
engine ran like it was on fewer cylinders. After the problem reoccurred a
couple of times; I installed a Pertronix system and the problem never came
back.

I came upon this pearl of wisdom sometime ago so I will state it
again:

Anytime you have a problem with an engine not running well, the first thing
you need to check is the distributor, the advance curve and all the wires in
the ignition system.

Basically if the any part of the ignition system is not working
correctly you can get a variety of symptoms. You could play with
carburetor setting all week long and still have the engine run like crap.
Get the ignition system working correctly first then you can move to the
carb and beyond.

Been there, done that, frustrated the hell out of me until I got the
distributor working right.

I believe most Holley fuel pumps need a bypass flow system so the
pump is always moving fuel which keeps the pump cool. They do not like to
dead head or slow down which heats up the pump motor windings and burns them
out.

Hope this helps

Very nice pictures.

Hello everyone,

FINALLY - after 7 long months, I got my car started. ( yee, haw ) I was so
excited I drove several laps around my block, open headers & all. Several
minutes later the police showed up. Apparently one of my neighbors wasn't
enjoying the sound of the motor as much as me!

The cool thing was the cops were more interested in checking out the car
rather than hassling me. LOL...

Anyway - On the way home from the exhaust shop today the motor started
making little popping sounds - more like little back-fires through the carb.

There was some stuttering too when applying more throttle. I also noticed a
significant loss of power. ( when revving the engine it almost felt like a
4cyl ? ) The temp was in the low 80's.

Does this sound like it could be vapor-lock?

My fuel line is rubber hose & currently routed up along the bell-housing,
behind the passenger side head, & into the carb. I also have a Holley red
elec fuel pump rated at 7psi if that make any difference...

Thanks in advance,

Rob Smith
