You made me reflect on the history of car fluids and the sequence in my
Tiger. 31 year ownership, on road the whole time. I started with DOT 4 but
changed to silicon maybe 15 years ago.
I've been using Silicon to avoid the hydroscopic tendency of silicon for
some years now and a new stainless clutch slave and rebuild of the rear brakes
(flooded rear axle) last fall convinced me it was a good time to try DOT 4
again. I also now winter store the car in a warm dry, temp stable environment,
negating some of the reason to use Silicon.
What a difference! I don't use a booster and there was immediate positive
results. But the bite on the clutch was the real convincer. Much much better.
Well, now to the mess on the floor. I took the carpet out of the car,
keeping in mind what Gary/Arado7 reminded me of and went to the local $.25 coin
operated high-pressure wand car wash. I loaded in $5.00 worth and used the soap
for 2/3 of the time, flipped the carpet a couple of times, changed to clear
water for the remaining time, put it on a green garbage bag for the ride home.
At home it lay in sun (great dry day) and by evening it was almost dry. Hung
it by the oil furnace overnight (it heats all the house water) and this
morning the curse was gone. Still a tiny, tiny bit "oily?" to the touch but I
can
try other things now that it is essentially OK.
