I found a good 5-bolt 289 block (thanks, Curt!) and did a rebuild using:
- Keith Black 0.030" over pistons
- Edelbrock Performer aluminum heads
- Comp Cams 262H grind hydraulic cam
- F4B Manifold
- Edelbrock 500 CFM carb
- Stock cast exhaust manifolds and exhaust diameter
- Ford dual-point distributor with Pertonix

My goal was a responsive, torquey engine, which is what I got. With the
Tiger stock air cleaner, the engine measured over 240 HP at the rear wheels
at a very lazy 5100 RPM. Interestingly enough, WITHOUT the stock air
cleaner, we gained almost 20 HP with a secondary main jet increase.

I know this doesn't rival the monster stroker engines, but I think it
matches the character of the Tiger rather well. Besides, I know with simple
intake and exhaust mods, 300 HP is available. My only regret is not to have
gone to a roller cam conversion. I use SAE SG oils to keep those cam
surfaces scuff-free.

A word about 260s. I researched interchangeability and was told by several
sources not to use heads with intakes larger than 1.67" diameter, as the
smaller bore will not support the later Hypo valve sizes (1.78" and larger).
If someone has used the larger valve heads successfully, I would like to
know. My original 260 has been retired and sits disassembled under a
workbench, quietly waiting for its rebuild. I am still pondering the
possibilities of a stroker kit with 3.830" pistons.
