Mike,
  One of the more common methods is to warm the engine. Then, with the
engine running, back off the nut until you hear a clattering sound. Slowly
retighten the nut until the clattering just stops. From there some go
anywhere from 1/8th to 1/2 a turn tighter.
 That said, you might be wondering how oil doesn't get all over the place.
An old valve cover with an opening in the top helps. Some engines allow for
clips on the rockers to redirect "most" of the oil. Others may have more
specific advice.
  But, yes, your adjustment sounds too tight. Be aware that the "potential"
exists to create coil bind on the valve spring, exsessive load on the cam
lobe and an engine run too long in this state can burn valves because the
heat to not being conducted out properly. Likely you have done no damage,
but don't let the condition persist.
