In that case, the transmission mount is slotted, so that it will
accommodate some fore/aft adjustment of the engine/transmission
assembly. Try loosening off the nuts that hold the transmission mount
rubber isolator to the trans mount crossmember.

yes, they're the right way around.

the old mounts had oval holes which were more forgiving and I suppose
there is a little tension in the drivetrain as I had similar issues
changing the rear springs and had to jack the axle backwards.
