thanx to all that offered info on wiring for ignition switch.
The problem was the white/red wire that goes from solenoid to switch had
pulled partly away from the connector and there were only a few strands
connected. Sripped wire and installed new connnector and it starts every time.
I was not looking forward to pulling the starter out with the headers there.
