Alternator I would like to use. Do either chain covers work better with an
alternator?
Can I use stock '85 alternator brackets on a Tiger?

If the 260 is not badly corroded at the interior of the pump cavity or
at the interface with the block you can re-use that housing. It has the
proper hole for the oil dipstick. You will likely be running an
aftermarket, 50 Oz., 3 hole damper and the timing marks should line up
properly. This will allow you to use a Stewart waterpump (#16103) which
is the best stock configuration high performance waterpump. I run my
'92 spec 302 without a mechanical fan and it runs just fine with 16"
electric pusher fan. You may need to get a high performance radiator
core. Electric fans don't work well with the old fat core radiators.
When you do this you will need a thermostatic switch and a relay system
to control the fan, to avoid taking the current through any of the OEM
wiring. Without the mechanical fan, you can eliminate the fan shroud
and it will clear up a lot of space in that area. You may need to
eliminate some of the OEM sheetmetal to get a large electric fan
mounted. You can also move the radiator cap to the right hand tank and
dump the OEM reservoir. This is where the cap should be anyway. I've
done this with lots of Tigers with great success. I can send pics if
they would help.
