I bought my Tiger in 1979 with bias ply ply tires on 13 inch rims and ran =
it that way for 10 years.=C2=A0 The car was slick in every scenario but one=
.=C2=A0 On the street it was best to steer with the accelerator pedal but I=
was embarrassed=C2=A0 more than once not doing so.=C2=A0 Busy intersection=
making a normal left or right hand turn on 4 lane roads after waiting on l=
ight, the rear end would just swing around and I would be pointing the wron=
g way in the middle of the highway.=C2=A0 Cars would start honking, hands w=
aving, no middle fingers, basically just laughing.=C2=A0 I would throw up m=
y hands in surrender and then in a swirl of smoke and rubber head off down =
the road.
The only time that these bias ply tires seemed to be any benefit was when d=
rag racing on the beach.=C2=A0 Uncap the CAT 3" cutouts on their headers, l=
et a bunch of air out of the tires, wave money and take on all comers befor=
e the bands started on the beach and the serious drinking began.=C2=A0 Bias=
ply tires seemed to work then.
Now 15" LAT 70 wheels with good radial rubber, it is a different car to dri=
ve and much more enjoyable without the 180 degree rear end swinging around.
Different times, different tires, some things do get better with age.

To answer your basic question ("What was it like..."), in 1966 I was given=
a used (but still good) set of Michelin X tires (remember them?). I instal=
led these in place of the original equipment Dunlop SP tires (1965 Mk1). I =
was amazed at the difference these made in the overall enjoyment of the car=
. Handled better; rode better; better mileage; etc. etc. It was a revelatio=
n to a person who was still very early in his automotive journey.
