   When I cut my studs down I used 
   a cutoff tool and a lot of WD40 to cool the studs while 
   cutting (2 person job with a fire extingusher along side).

Studs are actually really easy to cut with a hacksaw, which saves some
of the worry.  After you cut one, run a grinder delicately over the
end to restore the bevelled shape. Put a nut on the stud first, so
that you can unscrew it after you cut the stud to clean up any damage
to the threads.
