It sounds to me as if this car really is a 1971 except in name. If TR6s 
are like other Triumphs imported to the U.S. during that time, the 
engine numbers for the 1972 year would be CCxxxxxUE, the U indicating 
the Federal-spec. low compression engine. Since you didn't mention that, 
I'd assume you have the higher compression engine.

Again, I'm not so intimately familiar with TR6s, but what about the 
labeling on various knobs? By 1972, Spitfires, for example, had deleted 
the "picture" on the choke knob and replaced it with the word "CHOKE" 
and did similar things with wiper switch knob, etc. I think this might 
also have had something do so with silly Federal regulations. Did they 
do the same on TR6s; if so, what do your dashboard knobs have on them? I 
think there were other similar, minor changes to other things on the 
dashboard. It would be interesting to compare your car to a "later" 1972 
if you can locate one.
