Interesting things those.  From past experience I think the most likely cause of
a "death rattle at start up is caused by a worn timing chain & chain tensioner.

It takes a little time to get oil to a hydrolic chain tensioner. If the chain is
worn, it can rattle around in its housing until the tensioner gets enough 
pressure to tighten the chain.
