If (as someone just mentioned) the TR6 voltmeter is slow to respond, then the 
ammeter is 
overly sensitive.  Turn blower on, ammeter goes -, then +, slightly, hit 
brakes, same 
result, turn on headlamps, hear needle ping on - side, then center.  Neat to 
watch!!
