Yes. Fitting a J-OD to an early (before 73) TR6 would be far more difficult.
The rear engine mounting points (place where the gearbox bolts to the frame)
were changed starting with 73 model year (commission #s with CF prefix)
presumably to accomodate the J-OD. If your 73 TR6 has a non-OD gearbox
you will note the gearbox bolts to a bracket which then bolts to the frame.
If you're putting in a J-OD gearbox you can loose the bracket as the J-OD
will bolt onto the frame where the bracket bolted on. If you're putting in 
an A-OD gearbox it will bolt onto the bracket just as the non-OD gearbox
did.
The A-OD has the advantage of engaging in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears while the 
J-OD only works in 3rd and 4th. Are there other differences that give the J
type
an edge? I'd like to know.
