Hi,
If your TR6 rear bearings are bad, you will be able to "wobble" the
wheel. If you get play in the side-to-side direction and in the
top-to-bottom direction, the bearings are probably shot.
It is easiest to test the bearings with the axles in the car.
Of course the manual shows you how to measure "end-float" and this would
be the definitive measure of bearing wear etc. Excessive end float
usually indicates bearing wear or improper hub assembly.
As for the failure mode, some folks report clunks, some report squeaks
etc. If the bearings are really shot, the hub will likely need replacing
($$$) or it'll fail. Failure can be a major bummer because it could cause
you to lose control of the car. I have heard of this hapenning on race
cars and the results were very ugly.
It seems like a lot of folks get em rebuilt "every now and then" just to
be safe.
In any case, have the rebuild done by a competent shop that has rebuilt
the hubs before!!! Bringing them to many shops will leave you with ruined
hubs because the shops don't have the correct tools to take the hub apart
to replace the bearings and seals. I know, I have several ruined hubs in
my basement.
