Net News - In Brief
March 1997 Volume II Issue 2
Well, March is almost here, and with it brings developments
that can alter the Internet as we know it. You're probably aware that
the Supreme Court is hearing arguments on the CDA - Free Speech on
the Net, on the 19th, at 10am. This will have a long-term and
potentially devastating effect on the way the public, and Internet
Professionals can conduct themselves.
There are presently states that hold the ISP accountable for
the content and actions of their customers, this situation will
worsen if the CDA is passed.
In other news, the government is trying to pass a bill that
would force the Internet Service Providers to release complete
information regarding who their customer base is. That would mean
that they would have a complete list of every business and private
individual on the net - another case of 'big brother' keeping tabs on
you. Along with that, certain areas of the country have made it a
crime to log onto the internet using an alias.
Contrary to what the telcos would have you believe, the issue
of charging tariffs to companies that provide internet access, and
'per minute' charges to modem users is not dead - the FCC has
tentatively, and that's the operative word here, put off the
decision, and for the moment, will not act on the telcos requests.
The FCC is doing a good job of disseminating the information, but the
more input they get, the more likely they are to make a judgement in
favor of the Internet.
There are too many issues out there for anyone to remain
uninvolved. It reaches a point where if you refuse to stand up for
yourselves and the Internet, you may soon not have anything worth
standing up for.
