Joe, have you considered filling the dent with solder rather than
welding? Using plumbing solder, supplies & methods has worked to seal
gas tanks for me more than once, and has the added benefit of allowing
you to fill or cover area's when you aren't sure where the leak is
comming from.

Same cautions as with welding apply.
