This is one of the better things that came out of the energy crisis of the
'70s. Right turn on red was initiated as an energy conservation feature. No
need to sit and idle, wasting gas, when traffic is clear.

The origins of right turn on red may predate the "oil crisis" of the 70's.
While on a 1968 vacation to Phoenix, they had a right on red law that was
in effect. I'm do not know when it became law. Could be the oil crisis
just accelerated other states in enacting similar laws.
