Lew, 
I thought Andy and I went over that earlier.  In any case, They are not
glove boxes in the strictest sense.  In actuality, they are pockets with
no door that are supported by the padded rails that go laterally between
the center console and the "A" posts.  They are originally made from
cardboard and that explains why most are gone on old cars.  I don't know
of anybody that sells replacements for the early models, so the fact
that somebody fabricated some from aluminum was a bonusa for my car. 
They are a bit noisy when stuff rattles around in them, however.
