Chris,

Yes, you can remove the studs with the hub still on the car, but you 
have to be careful not to "tap" too hard or you'll bend/crack the hub 
flange. :(

I had the (?) advantage with the race car of having the studs so loose 
that they wobbled (!!!) when I went to change them this past spring.

Nahh.... not part of the drum. The drum should come right off after you 
remove the retaining screws. The studs are press fit in to the hub. I 
think you can "tap" them out with the hub in place.....

Anyone do this more recently than myself ? (Seven years ago... I could 
be
wrong....)
